  • Artwork Description

Five figures sit on a chairlift numbered 33, rendered in a distinctive charcoal and oil technique that sets this painting apart from all others in the chairlift series. The background is a near-blank white, the chair floating in space, the figures hunched in classic cold-lift posture. One leans forward and peers down - the moment of the title made visible. The others react with varying degrees of resignation. No colour to speak of: this is monochrome, almost forensic in its observation of a very specific and universal human experience.

  • Artist's Insight

Chairlifts force people into shared, inescapable moments. This painting is inspired by one of the most common chairlift mishaps - gloves, poles, hats, or these days phones - dropped with absolutely no chance of recovery. The humour is dry and observational. It's less about the dropped item and more about that shared pause where everyone knows what's happened, and there's nothing to be done about it.
