  • Artwork Description

    A single chairlift carries five figures across a pale, wintry sky, snow-covered treetops just visible below. At the centre of the group sits a lone snowboarder, surrounded by skiers. The skiers are turned, fractionally but unmistakably, in his direction - their body language doing the talking that the title makes explicit. The composition is loose and abstract in the background, built from whites and soft watercolour-like blues. Paint drips at the bottom carry a graphic, sketch-like energy. One of the most loosely handled paintings in the chairlift series.

  • Artist's Insight

    This is part of my long-running chairlift series where one snowboarder finds themselves surrounded by skiers. The title reflects the playful rivalry that's always existed on the slopes. It's not mean-spirited - just observational humour. The kind shared between friends on a lift ride up the mountain.

About the Artist

Johny is a painter and founder of Gallery Midnight in Balham. His work is often described as “abstract on reality”, capturing familiar landscapes, seascapes and city scenes with expressive colour and movement. Influenced by a life spent between London, the Alps and the Caribbean, his paintings explore changing light, atmosphere and energy, inviting viewers to see well-known places in new and unexpected ways.
