  • Artwork Description

    This was one of the first chairlift paintings Johny ever made, and it shows in the best possible way - bright, poppy, unapologetically lively. Six figures sit in full colour against a grey-turquoise background, each in a different ski suit: no helmets, which quietly dates the scene and gives it a specific, vintage warmth. One is a snowboarder; five are skiers. The legs dangle freely. A few snow-dusted trees peek up from below. The painting is alive with colour and personality - earlier in style than the later chairlift works, but no less observed.

  • Artist's Insight

    This was one of my very first chairlift paintings. The snowboarder among the skiers felt like an obvious moment of humour - no skier really wants to ski with a snowboarder; you end up waiting for too much of the day. The fact that nobody is wearing a helmet tells you everything about when this was painted. It was a different time.

About the Artist

Johny is a painter and founder of Gallery Midnight in Balham. His work is often described as “abstract on reality”, capturing familiar landscapes, seascapes and city scenes with expressive colour and movement. Influenced by a life spent between London, the Alps and the Caribbean, his paintings explore changing light, atmosphere and energy, inviting viewers to see well-known places in new and unexpected ways.
