  • Artwork Description

Three figures move through a pale, near-monochrome winter landscape - an adult with ski over one shoulder, one child carrying their own skis (and evidently both sets), and a smaller child holding the adult's hand. Snow-laden trees cluster to the left; a wash of turquoise in the sky above and at the foreground suggests ice underfoot. The figures carry subtle hints of colour on hats and clothing. The painting is intimate, funny, and entirely familiar to anyone who has organised a family ski morning.

  • Artist's Insight

This came from a day in the Vallorcine Valley in France, watching families negotiate the timeless battle of who's carrying what. I wanted to capture the personality of the moment - the way skiing is sometimes magical, sometimes exhausting, and often both at once. It's a painting built on affection, with a wink to every parent who has heard 'Why do I have to?' far too many times.
