  • Artwork Description

Cool greys, silvery blues and charcoal tones dominate this deeply atmospheric painting of Tooting Bec Lido in winter. A low light barely breaks through the leafless treeline, hinting at sunrise but offering no warmth. Steam lifts gently from the water's surface, immediately conveying the biting cold of the scene. The coloured changing cabins stretch across the composition, their muted yet distinct hues reflected softly in the glassy pool below. The lido becomes a mirror - calm, still and cold - amplifying the silence of the moment. There is no crowd here, no noise, only the kind of morning where the temperature feels close to minus five, and only the bravest step in.

  • Artist's Insight

I wanted to paint a feeling rather than a view. The challenge with this painting was making you feel cold when you look at it. I kept the palette almost entirely cool - no warmth at all except for a tiny suggestion behind the trees - and I allowed the forms to dissolve into mist and reflection. The steam coming off the water was the key detail: it tells you everything about the temperature immediately. This painting is for the winter swimmers, the ones who come regardless. There's a kind of quiet heroism in what they do, and I wanted the painting to hold that.
