Winter Park
by Johny Midnight
Battersea Park on a frosty afternoon - the Victorian bandstand at the centre, Lowry-like figures across the ice and the warm amber glow of a setting sun through bare winter trees.

Artwork Description
The Victorian bandstand anchors the composition, its structure rising from frost-whitened ground as figures scatter across the park in every direction. Children skid across icy patches, parents push prams, dog walkers move along the treeline and friends stroll in conversation as the day begins to fade. The sky is heavy and layered - greys and winter whites warmed by an amber glow seeping through bare trees as the sun descends. Long stretched shadows fall across the ground, telling the hour precisely. The bare trees on either side create a natural frame, their branches stripped back. Though Lowry-esque in the distribution of figures, the painting is warmer in tone - lively, layered and unmistakably contemporary.

Artist's Insight
Battersea Park in winter has a particular quality I've always wanted to paint - that combination of cold air and warm afternoon light, the bandstand in the middle distance and everybody wrapped up and walking. There's something very civilised about it: people getting out even when they don't have to. The Lowry comparison is fair in terms of how the figures are distributed across the canvas, but my painting is warmer and more specific. These aren't abstracted workers - they're people with scooters and modern coats. It's London right now, not a northern mill town. The amber glow through the trees was the detail that made me want to paint it.
