  • Artwork Description

    Three skiers stand on a snow ridge at the top of a steep, unforgiving gully. One has already committed - only half his torso remains visible as he drops from view. A second stands upright, skis planted, body language arrested. A third holds skis vertically, looking down into the drop ahead. The palette is blues, deep greys and black, lit by sharp white snow highlights. Texture is worked heavily through scraped paint and broken surfaces, echoing the jagged terrain. The empty sky above removes all distraction. The decision is the only thing in the frame.

  • Artist's Insight

    I've skied enough sketchy lines to know this feeling. Someone always says it - sometimes out loud, sometimes only in their head. What I love about this scene is that it's not about heroics. It's about hesitation. The half-disappearing skier wasn't planned - he evolved naturally in the composition and ended up perfectly summing up the line between commitment and doubt.

About the Artist

Johny is a painter and founder of Gallery Midnight in Balham. His work is often described as “abstract on reality”, capturing familiar landscapes, seascapes and city scenes with expressive colour and movement. Influenced by a life spent between London, the Alps and the Caribbean, his paintings explore changing light, atmosphere and energy, inviting viewers to see well-known places in new and unexpected ways.
