  • Artwork Description

    Two skiers are paused on the rough, uneven surface of the Mer de Glace glacier, a landscape of broken snow, blue ice shadows and the occasional hidden crevasse. One figure sits back, skis sticking up from the snow, taking a breather. The other stands nearby with skis across his shoulder and poles in hand, his body language suggesting patience running measurably thin. The figures are painted in charcoal greys, almost part of the landscape. The surface is thick, textured and slightly treacherous-looking.

  • Artist's Insight

    On long glacier runs like the Vallée Blanche, someone always takes longer. This painting came from skiing with friends and constantly waiting for one particular mate to catch up. I named him Greeny. The painting is honest rather than dramatic - skiing isn't always about moving fast. Sometimes it's about standing still on a glacier and having a laugh about it.

About the Artist

Johny is a painter and founder of Gallery Midnight in Balham. His work is often described as “abstract on reality”, capturing familiar landscapes, seascapes and city scenes with expressive colour and movement. Influenced by a life spent between London, the Alps and the Caribbean, his paintings explore changing light, atmosphere and energy, inviting viewers to see well-known places in new and unexpected ways.
