Artwork Description
This large acrylic painting presents Tooting Bec Lido at its liveliest - approximately 200 figures filling the poolside in a vivid, Lowry-inspired but warmly humorous composition. Swimmers are in the water; sunbathers stretch across the poolside; people chat, eat, and dive. The coloured changing cabins are prominent at the centre, their bold doors providing a rhythmic anchor to the scene. Above, the sky is painted in mosaic squares of turquoise, blue and white, while the trees in the background take on the dense, rounded quality of large broccoli. The scene invites the viewer to search for themselves - to find their own afternoon within the communal pleasure of a South London summer.

Artist's Insight
This was the very first lido painting I made, and I wanted it to feel like a portrait of the area rather than a landscape. Lowry came to mind - that approach of distributing figures across a canvas to create a collective rather than individual story. But where Lowry's paintings can feel melancholy, I wanted this one to feel like celebration. Everyone is having a good time. I put about 200 people in there and I'm still not sure I captured everyone who's actually at the lido on a hot day. The mosaic sky was a technique I was developing at the time - a way of structuring the openness of the space.
